Kurt Volkman joined WATG in 2019 and brings 25 years of specialized mixed-use architectural experience to the team. He is Vice President and Client Leader within WATG’s Chicago office and is a licensed architect and native Chicagoan. Throughout his career, Kurt has developed an ethos of development as enlightened urbanism that focuses on the marriage of urban planning, architecture and experiential design that results in holistic placemaking. He has focused on a wide variety of typologies including hospitality, healthcare, multifamily housing, office, retail, entertainment, corporate and education projects, locally in the United States and globally.
Kurt has extensive full service architectural design project experience in the Midwest and East coast of the United States, including a comprehensive background in both new construction and renovation and project repositioning. His philosophy and approach to design is centered on proper planning to establish the criteria for successful design that allows for innovation to occur and appropriate programming that focuses on inspiring and engaging the end users.
Kurt was most recently Senior Associate Vice President, Senior Designer for Arcadis / CallisonRTKL in Chicago where he was responsible for leading design efforts for projects in the Midwest and internationally along with studio design management, operational planning and business development. His recent projects include the Godfrey Hotel in Chicago, The Northwestern Mutual Campus in Milwaukee and the renovation of the historic Chicago Merchandise Mart.
Throughout his career, Kurt has developed approximately 21 million square feet of corporate, commercial and health care space, more than 23,000 residential units, 12 million square feet of retail space, 3.2 million square feet of convention center space and 3,000 hotel/resort guestrooms.
