An 1,100-seat opera house is taking shape in Muscat, capital of Oman. The palatial complex, designed in the same architectural style as its surrounding buildings, is scheduled to open in October 2011.

WATG's concept balances ethnic Omani design elements with contemporary styles, using pure Omani motifs (such as colonnades, terraces and sculptural tower forms) in the exteriors and moving towards traditional Arabesque in the central parts of the opera house. No designs for the auditorium have yet been released, though it is known the design uses red and gold, symbolising royalty. The project was initiated by Sultan Qaboos, who is currently celebrating his 40th year as ruler of Oman.

Based in Oman's capital Muscat, the Royal Opera House is a stunning fusion of contemporary architecture with local cultural architecture. Who's the culprit of this interesting love relationship between tradition and modernism? It is none other than WATG, a multinational architectural firm, who are extending their efforts in the Middle East to prove that extravagant architecture does not abide by culture or language.

CHALLENGE The challenge was to design a unique and distinctive upscale venue for a 1,000-seat concert hall in a new urban district which could also be used for musical, theatrical and operatic productions.

SOLUTION The architectural character of the building was influenced by the grand style of modern Omani palaces, and reflects their outward design features and circulation patterns. The front entrance is an expansive palm-treed piazza backed by five tall, arched entryways into a hall that forms the central focus of a colonnade designed to create a grand feeling of entrance. The structure was finished in locally-sourced limestone and complementary stucco. The venue incorporates a movable acoustic shell within the stage area and adjustable proscenium elements to create alternative acoustic configurations and stage formats to suit the various requirements. These elements provide a unique, adaptable volume control arrangement which gives unparalleled natural acoustic potential.

SIZE Eight hectares (20 acres); 1,000-seat concert hall (18,580 SM / 200,000 SF)

AMENITIES World-class opera house and concert theatre; auditorium; formal landscaped gardens; cultural souk with retail, food and beverage outlets; arts centre
