Solar panels and efficient drip irrigation are not often associated with luxury hospitality design, but that's a perception developer Phil Sherburne is out to change. For him, maintaining a sense of environmental responsibility means more than just new, green technology. The mantra at the Bardessono hotel in California's Napa Valley is 'to turn scrap into style'. Sherburne enlisted the help of design firm Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo, as well as a slew of environmental consultants, local artisans and landscape designers to complete the project. Altogether, the hotel encompasses 62 rooms, a 93-seat restaurant and bar, rooftop pool, spa and event space, located on the 2.4ha Bardessono family homestead.

Hotel designed, constructed to LEED standards Designed by Irvine, Calif.-based architects WATG, developed by Phil Sherburne and operated by Kirkland, Wash.-based MTM Luxury Lodging, Bardessono was destined for LEED certification at its blueprints. Its design, construction and operation follow LEEDs Green Building Rating System guidelines. It uses solar and geothermal energy, sustainable building materials, organic landscape-management practices and energy management systems.
"INNCOM provides three vital parts of energy management in the guestroom," said Chuck Marratt, vice president of information technology for MTM Luxury Lodging. "It controls the lights in the room, the thermostat in the room, and introduces automated solar shades highly technical Venetian-like blinds placed on the exterior of guestroom windows to keep heat in or out when unoccupied or empty. All cogs operate in an automated environment in the guestroom."

12/10/2008 - Bardessono Preps for Ultra-Green Debut in Napa Valley

Green developer Phil Sherburne is putting the final touches on his latest venture, the Bardessono hotel in Napa Valley, for a February opening. Designed by WATG's Seattle office, the 62-room luxury hotel and spa is full of eco-friendly details. The property will obtain approximately half of its electricity needs from a 200-kilowatt photovoltaic solar system mounted and concealed atop the hotel's flat-topped roofs. To heat and cool guestrooms as well as the property's domestic water supply, a system of 82 geothermal wells were drilled to work with a specially developed ground source heat pump system. Bardessono also makes use of "upcycled" materials such as recycled steel, green glass tiles, and fly ash concrete. Throughout the property, WATG is using salvaged wood from locally sourced Monterey cypress, walnut, redwood, and eucalyptus trees. Locally quarried tufa stone, salvaged and re-cut from the Bardessono family's original homestead, adorns the hotel's entryway as well as its reception and dining areas. The hotel will also implement low-water use, on-site waste management, and LED and fluorescent lighting.
