World-renowned hospitality design firm WATG and its interiors studio, Wimberly Interiors, are pleased to announce the opening of Viceroy Kopaonik Serbia. The luxury alpine resort is Viceroy Hotels & Resorts’ first European property, with WATG and Wimberly Interiors leading the architecture, interiors and landscape architecture of this first-in-class luxury mountain retreat.

Located amongst Serbia’s largest mountain range, the 119-room Viceroy Icon Collection retreat adds a glamorous West Coast vibe to Serbia’s largest ski resort. The year-round destination retreat offers ski-in/ski-out and services such as ski valets, a full-service spa, indoor and outdoor pools and an assortment of culinary options.

“Kopaonik has been an attractive destination for many years and, with the addition of Viceroy Kopaonik, it finally has a luxury hotel offering that truly celebrates its extraordinary natural surroundings. We were thrilled to bring the first European Viceroy to life, taking full advantage of the location and incorporating touches of Serbian history and culture throughout in a cohesive effort with our architecture and landscape architecture teams,” says Rachel Johnson, Studio Director of Wimberly Interiors London.

With textural stone, ice-like glass, local Serbian oak and hammered metals, the hotel’s overall design concept incorporates raw materials to evoke a sense of alpine living and opulence. Guests are greeted with stunning views of the mountainside, and a timber-clad library adjacent to the lobby invites guests to sit by the fire and stay awhile. The art collection skews eclectic, with local Serbian artists commissioned for contemporary pieces in the hotel’s public areas.

Three restaurants are located on the ground level of the hotel — all looking out towards the mountains and ski slopes in the winter months. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls frame the views, taking full advantage of the scenery and creating a vibe more akin to an opulent mountain family home rather than a hotel.

Viceroy Kopaonik guestrooms balance industrial and classic design. Inspired by a timber box, the rooms layer wood textures and crafted cerused oak millwork to create a cozy yet elevated setting. Horsehair-wrapped headboards, locally patterned textiles, woolen drapes, and sofas edged in traditional Serbian lacework provide soft touches to balance the wood. Vintage ski photography from Kopaonik adorns guestroom walls. The Presidential Suite features gold, orange, and red — all common colors in Serbian patterns and textiles, while other accommodations have green tones in a nod to the landscape and surrounding forest.

The resort’s spa, the only full-service luxury spa in Kopaonik, embraces the thermal aspects of wellness. The deep and dark almost cavernous space is a warm cocoon, with textural materials focusing on the play of light, resulting in a peaceful engagement of the senses.
