The design concept
Four Seasons Maui at Wailea is located on the southwest coast of Wailea, Hawaii. Completed by WATG in 1990, the resort’s architecture embodies a harmonious blend of elegance and ease. The design concept focuses on seamlessly integrating the structures with the lush gardens, drawing guests’ attention toward the panoramic ocean views. Classical elements such as columns, blue tile roofs, shouldered arches, coffered ceilings, and marble floors contribute to the resort’s island elegance. A central courtyard, acting as the focal point, enhances the classical atmosphere with its urn fountains, formal parterre, and royal palms.
Key design elements included cross ventilation, sun-protected and breeze-cooled open spaces, ample natural lighting, and a seamless blending of boundaries between indoors and outdoors.
Guest experience
WATG approached the design challenge by incorporating various design elements that not only capitalized on the building’s tropical surroundings but also enhanced the overall guest experience. Key design elements included cross ventilation, sun-protected and breeze-cooled open spaces, ample natural lighting, and a seamless blending of boundaries between indoors and outdoors.
Ocean vistas
The U-shape of the building, complemented by a central courtyard facing the water, created a focal point for guests to enjoy stunning views. Additionally, the guestrooms were strategically placed at a 45-degree angle to corridors, ensuring that 85 percent of the accommodations offered ocean vistas. This thoughtful design approach fulfilled the client’s vision of providing guests with unparalleled views and an immersive tropical experience.
A testament to the power of an integrated approach to creating distinct, timeless and operationally precise destinations which result in enduring prosperity for our clients.
Interior Design
Since the original design, Wimberly Interiors has been involved in refurbishment projects throughout the resort, including public areas, restaurants, and guestrooms. The interiors exude a refined ambiance, showcasing clean lines and a tailored yet modern aesthetic, with a focus on guest experience. Drawing inspiration from nature, the interior design of Four Seasons Wailea embraces the soothing tones of the ocean, sand, and beach foliage. The design philosophy was to create a sense of place with a fresh and inviting residential atmosphere, reflecting the characteristics synonymous with the Four Seasons brand.
