Hengqin is an emerging city at the forefront of transformation within the Greater Bay Area. Once peripheral, it is now defining itself as a destination — driven by new economic energy, world-class attractions, and an ambition to become a highly integrated, sustainable urban environment.
To convey this sense of optimism, growth, and future-ready identity, Hotel Indigo Hengqin’s design vision by Wimberly Interiors is expressed through the concept of a “Tomorrow Land.” At its core stands the World Tree — a unifying symbol of resilience, connectivity, and sustained development. Grounded in nature yet aspirational in spirit, it reflects Hengqin’s emergence as a city shaped by economic vitality, without losing sight of its ecological foundation.
The lobby is conceived as the roots of the World Tree, grounding the guest experience and setting the tone for what follows. Sculptural forms and fluid geometries inspired by organic growth introduce layers of movement, while tactile materials evoke the biodiversity of the island.
Grounded in nature yet aspirational in spirit — an unmistakable sense of welcome, unique to the place, from arrival through to departure.
The all-day dining venue extends the narrative into a more immersive environment, drawing from the coexistence of birds and habitat. Elements of nests, feathers, and wetlands are translated into form, color, and texture — woven structures, layered materials, and organic silhouettes create a setting that feels both intricate and intuitive.
A palette drawn from avian tones introduces vibrancy against a grounded base, while sculptural forms bring a sense of play and discovery.
Every transition offers a moment of pause, discovery, and quiet wonder.
Public circulation spaces are envisioned as the branches of the World Tree, extending outward to connect while allowing the narrative to guide movement. Linear elements and branching geometries create a rhythmic progression, offering moments of pause and transition — much like moving beneath a canopy.
At the rooftop bar, the experience culminates. As the crown of the World Tree, elevated above the city, the space offers a moment to reflect, celebrate, and take in the broader landscape. Themes of harvest and reward are expressed through a bold visual identity, deep red flooring and walls set against a gold metallic ceiling and feature wall.
Drawing from the imagery of treetop fruits, branching curves and abstracted textures are woven into the design, subtly referencing ripeness and fruition. Perforated panels and a diamond-faceted feature wall interplay with light and shadow, while the glass paneling and ceiling frame expansive views. Richly textured seating and furniture complete the setting, reinforcing a sense of indulgence and celebration. Materiality here is both statement and symbolic.
Wellness spaces draw from the language of natural landscapes. Undulating forms and ridges reminiscent of mountain ranges shape the indoor pool and gym, encouraging movement and exploration. Light evokes the sensation of immersion in nature, creating a restorative and atmospheric environment.
Within the guest rooms, the narrative of metamorphosis becomes more intimate. Perforated butterfly artwork and subtle references to an enchanted garden unfold through patterns, textures, and spatial moments, revealing themselves gradually to encourage quiet discovery. A palette of light green textured walls, complemented by accents of orange and teal, echoes the vibrancy of butterfly wings. The result is a space that balances calmness with intrigue.
Across all spaces, the design language prioritizes expressiveness, infused with playfulness and optimism, reflecting a city in constant transformation. Guided by this energy, travelers are cared for beneath the World Tree of Hotel Indigo Hengqin, emerging refreshed, renewed, and reconnected.
“We saw Hotel Indigo Hengqin as an opportunity to establish a clear point of view — our first Indigo within our global portfolio, and a chance to redefine what lifestyle hospitality should look like today. Rather than dilute our approach, we applied a disciplined sense of luxury through abstraction and precise storytelling, distilling Hengqin’s ambition into something palpable — an unmistakable sense of welcome, unique to the place, from arrival through to departure. The result is a hotel that feels fresh, confident and contemporary — celebrating its context while remaining distinctly forward-looking.” – Paolo De Simone, Creative Director, Wimberly Interiors
Elevated above the city, the Red & Gold lounge is conceived as the crown of the World Tree where the experience culminates. Offering a moment to reflect, celebrate, and take in the broader landscape, it is a space to taste and celebrate the hotel’s narrative of fruition and success.
