WATG has had the honor of designing destinations in China since 1978. Witnessing the country’s remarkable economic growth first hand, WATG has played a part in shaping China’s urban skylines and tourism landscape, participating in over 450 projects ranging from mixed-use to luxury residential, iconic resorts and flagship hotels. In 2018, continuing our commitment to design excellence and providing an even more seamless experience for our clients, WATG and Wimberly Interiors opened its first full-service Shanghai office.

Despite short-term disruptions by the COVID-19 pandemic, China’s economy and tourism industry is on track to fully recover this year, which is extraordinary when contrasted against expected global GDP shrinkage of over four percent in 2020. In this paper, we delve into key drivers behind China’s enormous travel engine, and highlight a number of trends impacting the development of destinations across the country.
