Career Pathways

The pathways to building a successful career in architecture are ever changing. One route is an apprenticeship, which blends hands-on experience with academic learning. Rob Coates, an apprentice at WATG’s London Studio, shares his journey, including how he entered the apprenticeship scheme, his experiences at Cambridge University, and the key lessons he’s learning along the way.

The Spark of Inspiration

Rob’s passion for architecture was ignited during a school trip to Rome, where the city’s craftsmanship and historical structures captivated him. This experience shaped his academic path, leading him to the University of Portsmouth to study architecture. Seeking a work placement post university, he discovered WATG and embarked on his professional journey.

Being proactive, asking questions, and learning from experienced professionals, along with showing initiative, reliability, and a strong work ethic, has been key.

Breaking into the Industry: The Internship Experience

Transitioning from university to a professional setting came with its challenges. Rob initially found the fast-paced environment and tight deadlines daunting. Mastering new software, managing project files, and understanding workflows were all part of the learning curve. However, mentorship from experienced colleagues and strong professional relationships helped him adapt quickly.

One of the most notable moments of his internship came when he played a key role in developing a 3D-printed model of an arrival building. Anticipating potential visibility concerns from a critical client, Rob proactively designed removable canopies using small embedded magnets. This thoughtful solution not only addressed the client’s concerns before they were formally raised but also earned recognition from senior leaders and highlighted his strong problem-solving abilities.

Pursuing Higher Education: The Cambridge Apprenticeship Program

Introduced to the Cambridge apprenticeship course by his WATG mentor, Jeremy Heyes, Rob saw an exciting opportunity to advance his education while gaining industry experience. The rigorous application process included a portfolio submission, multiple interviews, and teamwork assessments, highlighting the program’s emphasis on collaboration and professional growth.

Balancing academic work with professional responsibilities is challenging, but effective time management and planning study leave have been crucial in navigating this commitment.

Balancing Work and Studies

Managing office deadlines alongside university coursework is no easy feat. One of the toughest modules Rob has faced so far was an architectural theory and history essay, an area he found particularly challenging. However, with planning and extra dedication after work, he successfully completed it.

A key advantage of the Cambridge apprenticeship structure is its unique format. Part 2 qualification takes three years, followed by nine months for Part 3. Unlike other UK universities offering shorter or single-day sessions, Cambridge incorporates two-week residential stints three times a year. These focused periods allow Rob to fully immerse himself in university work without office distractions, enabling better management of both commitments. Additional support from WATG, including study leave, educational resources, and mentorship, also plays a crucial role in easing the transition between academic and professional responsibilities.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, Rob aims to complete his degree within the next three years while continuing to grow in the industry. His aspirations include traveling, gaining international work experience, and expanding his knowledge across various architectural disciplines.

At WATG, we celebrate the ambition and dedication of apprentices like Rob, who are shaping the future of architecture through innovation and perseverance. To support our employees’ professional growth and aspirations, we offer educational assistance, career development opportunities, an active mentoring and internal networking program, buddy assignments, and a thorough orientation pathway.
