Iconic Buildings Rise In Cake Form Celebrating Archtober In Nyc
Yesterday WATG and Wimberly Interiors brought the Great Architectural Bake-Off (GABO) to NYC for the second time. Renowned names in design once again battled it out to recreate the world’s most iconic buildings entirely out of cake. Architectural heavy weights descended upon The Center for Architecture to battle it out with firms such as Dattner Architects, Davis Brody Bond, ZGF Architects, H3 Architects, Woods Bagot, Grade New York, Bespoke Careers, MADE, Hollwich Kushner and Wimberly Interiors all vying for the winning title.
Teams were provided with basic construction tools and encouraged to experiment with their use of edible ingredients. The architectural cakes were judged by experts and industry leaders in the fields of food, design and architecture. This year’s panel featured New York Magazine’s Emily Sundberg, esteemed architecture writer and critic Fred Bernstein, Dwell Magazine’s Allie Weiss, founder of SOFTlab Michael Szivos and renowned pastry chefs Michael Laiskonis and Raiza Costa.

Creations included the Guggenheim, McDonald’s, Pennovation, Bird’s Nest Stadium, 56 Leonard Street’s TriBeCa Tower and the upcoming Convention Center in Adelaide, Australia.
Davis Brody Bond took the cake with their rendition of The Smythsonian of African American History and Culture which was dedicated to J.Max Bond Jr, followed closely by Dattner Architect’s version of the World’s Fair Sphere in Queen’s.
