Nicolas Chapin joined WATG in 2019 and brings more than two decades of commercial, hospitality and mixed-use design expertise to the firm. Nicolas joined WATG to lead and grow the firm’s new multidisciplinary office in Shanghai. He has lived and worked in China since 2001 and his design and development work experience spans the globe – from China to North America, Australia, Asia and the Middle East.
In China, Nicolas has been responsible for the successful management and business development of design offices of all types from start-ups to new branches of large multi-national corporations. His work includes large and small-scale architecture, urban design, urban planning, landscape architecture, interior architecture, and environmental and wildlife conservation projects.
Nicolas’ most recent multidisciplinary projects include The Spring Residences, Streetscapes and Minfu Square in Shanghai; the Tianhu Haobu Sika Mall in Chengdu and the Wieden+Kennedy office and roof garden in Shanghai. Notable urban design projects include the mixed-use Shimao Li’an Water City in Sanya and the Nanjing Shangfang CBD. Nicolas’ architectural and landscape architecture projects include the Liutai Grand Arcade in Tianjin; Luoyang International City Centre; Concordia International School Shanghai and the Xixi Blossom Hill Inn, a 70-room boutique hotel in the Xixi National Wetland Park in Hangzhou.
During his tenure with Hyder Engineering in Shanghai, as the company’s youngest executive director, Nicolas oversaw the opening of a branch office in Shanghai in the midst of the global financial crisis and led the office to record growth financially and in staffing. Throughout his career in China, Nicolas has led both the business development and design for projects and has collaborated with international and local Chinese developers on mixed-use, hospitality, office, restaurant, public realm and luxury residential projects.
