CHALLENGE The challenge was to introduce the concept of an integrated destination that would set a new standard for UK seaside resorts. Though in a superb location, the existing resort is a conglomeration of disparate tourist attractions that have suffered from a lack of investment and vision. The "raw materials" of this resort are incredible, with room to expand a large area of public park land right on the waterfront. It is well serviced by the local infrastructure and even has its own railway station.
SOLUTION WATG worked closely with the tenants, owners, the community group, the town council and local planning department. The developer worked with the client to assemble all the land with the council so the master plan could deal with the destination as a complete entity. The solution included increasing the accessibility to the beach areas for the general public and increasing the water sports offerings with a new training pool and marina. Also, there was a new urban development plan issued for Torbay which included an iconic tower block for the bay.
