Seattle

Established in 2000, WATG Seattle is an intimate, design-driven office with the vast resources of a global firm with more than 60 years of experience. The office sits one block off the bustling Seattle waterfront a few blocks from historic Pike Place Market. Remodeled in 2006, the spacious office features old brick walls, high ceilings and windows looking out to Elliott Bay. Its open plan helps foster collaboration and innovative thinking, each and every day. The office is distinct in that it has a very creative operational philosophy; it pulls in talented staff from a variety of backgrounds to build its teams.

This week, the WATG team is in Hong Kong for client meetings and we set up shop in a tiny field office. The WATG Hong Kong Team is comprised of Perry Brown, Tom Fo, Mark Kowalski, Allen Hung, Aaron Ho, Delbert Ragland, Greg Villegas, Sharmila Tankha, Matt Page, Harvey Maruya, Carlos Meyer, Tiffany Lee and myself. In all thirteen of us are sitting elblow to elbow in a tight, but comfortable work space. "It takes thirteen to build a village."

Jason Van Bruaene 01.17.12 / Vietnam and China in 13 Days
Jason Van Bruaene, AIA,Associate,Designer
About a year ago I saw a short movie made by someone who travels a lot for his work. Inspired by what I saw, I decided to make my own to show my family, who doesn't fully understand what it is I do all day, what it's like on one of our trips. In November I had a long trip to Vietnam & China which seemed like a good trip for making a movie. This is the result.

01.12.12 / Combating Concrete with Strip Appeal
Natalie Ross, Landscape Designer
Strip Appeal is an ideas design competition and traveling exhibit, intended to stimulate and showcase creative design proposals for the adaptive reuse of small-scale strip-malls. They asked designers to answer the question, "how might the small-scale strip be reinvented and redeveloped to local advantage?"

09.20.11 / Over 300 People Visit WATG's "Park"
Natalie Ross, Landscape Designer
We had an amazing turnout for parking day. Though the morning started out a bit chilly, the sun eventually arrived along with hundreds of Seattle pedestrians willing to give our Plinko game a try! WATG's parking-day "park" was bustling for the entire six hours of operation, reaching its peak at lunchtime when most of the WATG Seattle staff came out to lend a hand. By 2:30 pm we had given away more than 300 wildflower seed bombs and 50 tulip bulbs for residents and visitors to plant this fall.

Susan Frieson 09.12.11 / Seattle Prepares for PARK(ing) Day 2011
Susan Frieson, Architect,Associate
PARK(ing) Day 2011 is in a few days and the Seattle team is in full swing preparing for the big reveal. Our theme embraces environmental issues regarding green spaces in keeping with the organizations mission, in a fun way. Our concept is Give & Take: WATG Seattle will Give a Seed & Take a Promise of giving back to the planet. Passers by are encouraged to write down that promise on the spot as a reminder. Seed balls are being made in house as the hand out. It's all meant to be fun & informative without being overwhelming. Fun is key - a giant PLINKO game is being constructed! The temporary 'park' will be on 1st avenue, near the famous Pike's Market & will take up two parking spaces.

Jason Van Bruaene 08.12.11 / A hotel case study
Jason Van Bruaene, AIA,Associate,Designer
One of the best parts about my job as an architect designing hospitality projects around the world is the opportunity to visit many of our projects' destinations to experience, and learn from, our client's competition in a given locale. There are moments of inspiration and wonder. There are (I can admit) moments of envy at not having thought of something first. And then there are moments of…?

Hand drawings from WATG's Seattle office will be featured in an art gallery this week! I was recently contacted by Lauran Klenow -- a friend, artist, and curator -- regarding a new exhibit at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle. We will be featuring some hand-drawn elevation studies for the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur that were done by our very own Andrew Lam and Jeff Naprawa. The opening reception -- Friday 22 April 6:00pm to 8:00pm – will feature a lecture by exhibiting artist Leo Saul Berk as well as the work of other artists and architects, including Richard Sundberg, Owen Richards Architects, Roy McMakin, Jeremy Mangan, Julie Alpert and Iole Alessandrini. The gallery is located at 1501 10th Ave. E; and the exhibit runs through 15 May.

Tom Williams 03.31.11 / Cross-Continent Collaboration
Tom Williams, AIA,Associate Vice President,Senior Project Designer
On a recent trip to Europe to meet with a group of investors for an uber-luxe residential resort in Vietnam, I called on my colleague John Goldwyn, in WATG's London office, and asked him to join me for the presentation. While my itinerary from Seattle included interesting opportunistic asides in London, Deauville, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Bruges, John's travel was significantly less complicated. He simply took a 40-minute flight from London City Airport to Schiphol International, followed by a quick cab ride. We had a quick lunch, caught up on our respective travels and projects, and then met our potential clients in the NH Jan Tabak hotel in Bussum (Netherlands).

Jason Van Bruaene 01.27.11 / Nine Highlights from a Visit to Oman and the UAE
Jason Van Bruaene, AIA,Associate,Designer
WATG's Seattle office recently had an old project come back to life with a new client and modified program. To kick things off, the project team flew to Oman for a charrette before filling an egregious hole in some of the team members' travel history: Dubai. While we were all familiar with the record breaking feats of engineering and design built in the last 10+ years, some of which WATG has been a part of, seeing them in a photo does not compare to seeing them in person. Additionally, our experience has been that in the Middle East comparisons are often drawn to what has been built in Dubai; and, therefore, we should take the time to acquaint ourselves with some of the highlights (or low-lights, depending on your point of view).
