MGM Grand Sanya

CHALLENGE The design challenge was to renovate and expand the existing Gloria Hotel, which was the first luxury hotel in Sanya, into an exciting guest experience using a contemporary and modern design while incorporating the MGM Grand brand as its first property in China. The guestroom count increased from 400 to approximately 650 keys.

SOLUTION An eight-story new hotel tower was added, complementing the massing of the existing hotel tower with a new look utilizing sweeping curves and stepped elements. A dramatic new six-story glass atrium and sculptural lobby element serves as a modern architectural focal point. The design for the lobby drew inspiration from the butterflies and numerous sea shells from the region and the towers are clad in glass and stone.
