WATG-Designed MGM Grand, Sanya Opens

First Non-Gaming, First China MGM Project

Irvine, February 2012

WATG is pleased to announce the opening of MGM Grand in Sanya, an emerging resort destination on South China Sea's Hainan Island, in China.  International destination design firm WATG was the design architect for the five-star resort.

MGM Sanya represents a strategic initiative for MGM to pursue non-gaming opportunities around the globe, capitalizing upon their successful brands from Las Vegas.  WATG embraced the opportunity to reinterpret the brand in a fresh and compelling aesthetic for a resort destination.

The property is located on the site of Sanya's original luxury hotel, The Gloria Hotel. WATG orchestrated a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the property to create a compelling and relevant resort experience for the next generation of leisure travelers.

The soaring eight-story hotel is highlighted by clean geometric lines and contemporary glass façade, that contrasts and compliments the lush tropical environment. The atrium lobby is situated at the intersection of the guestroom towers, providing an urban focal point for the resort. The choreography of the spaces provides a cocooning experience as guests transition from the lobby to the privacy of the luxurious guestrooms.

"Representing high style, prestige and harmony, the local butterflies and numerous sea shells inspired our design motifs and themes as we create dramatic experiences for the guest," said Mike Chun, senior vice president.
