11. Bardessono Yountville -- Placid pools reflecting geometric rock sculptures, a wall of fire, a stone path curving shell like outwards, walls alive with plants. This is a modern hotel that knows how to engage the elements. It also knows how to protect them with solar panels, ecofriendly taipa or rammed earth walls, reclaimed wood flooring, organic linens and non-toxic cleaning supplies. But there's not a hint of crunchiness to Bardessono. The high-ceiled rooms with their neutral cream on sand on slate color schemes feel more loft than commune. But complimentary wine tastings, yoga classes and the rooftop pool scene certainly encourage communing with the locals.

2.17.11 - The Nation's Greenest LUXURY Resort And Spa Is Profitable
Forbes

Based on its five-star experience, Bardessono Resort & Spa, could actually make money even if it wasn't the greenest resort & spa on the planet. And it's margins would be better as well.  But someone had to take that leap of faith and set the bar for 'green luxury.' The newest addition to California's Wine Country is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, Platinum certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. That's the highest level of commercial LEED certification.

When the Bardessono family chose to develop on their 1920s farmstead in the heart of Napa Valley, they reached out to Phil Sherburne, a former Seattle city-planner-turned-conscientious-developer, who shared a passion for the planet. Sherburne married luxury with a green approach in every aspect of planning the 62-room hotel, spa, and restaurant. Many of the ecological aspects are seamless, such as the solar roof panels, grey and black water-treatment systems, rammed-earth walls, and geothermal heating under the floors. Others are more noticeable, including organic bedding and cleaning supplies, as well as locally grown food. Even the wood used throughout is taken from salvaged materials.

Solar panels and efficient drip irrigation are not often associated with luxury hospitality design, but that's a perception developer Phil Sherburne is out to change. For him, maintaining a sense of environmental responsibility means more than just new, green technology. The mantra at the Bardessono hotel in California's Napa Valley is 'to turn scrap into style'.

Sherburne enlisted the help of design firm Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo, as well as a slew of environmental consultants, local artisans and landscape designers to complete the project. Altogether, the hotel encompasses 62 rooms, a 93-seat restaurant and bar, rooftop pool, spa and event space, located on the 2.4ha Bardessono family homestead.

Tucked away in the charming town of Yountville is the Bardessono hotel, restaurant, and spa. Cycling to nearby vineyards, getting elbow-deep in culinary garden classes (or having a snack of wood-fired pizza at the rooftop pool) and hiking Napa's wildflower-dotted hills with a botanist are among the outdoor activities.

This 62-room Napa Valley newcomer is upping the ante on green design: built almost exclusively from salvaged stone and reclaimed wood, it's the world's second LEED-certified Platinum hotel. But the modern, California-clean aesthetic (concrete floors; custom-designed couches) delivers a breath of fresh air amid Yountville's faux French and Tuscan styles. Almost everything at the hotel, from the Coyuchi cotton bed linens to the seasonal menu at the restaurant, is organic, sourced from within a 100-mile radius. Doubles from $550, including breakfast.

In a state as environmentally progressive as California, it's hard to claim to be the first to set a sustainable benchmark. But that's exactly what the design team at Honolulu-based WATG has accomplished with the design of the Bardessono hotel, a 62-room boutique luxury inn and spa in Yountville, California, which recently received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Hospitality.net

Hotel designed, constructed to LEED standards Designed by Irvine, Calif.-based architects WATG, developed by Phil Sherburne and operated by Kirkland, Wash.-based MTM Luxury Lodging, Bardessono was destined for LEED certification at its blueprints. Its design, construction and operation follow LEED’s Green Building Rating System guidelines. It uses solar and geothermal energy, sustainable building materials, organic landscape-management practices and energy management systems.

"INNCOM provides three vital parts of energy management in the guestroom," said Chuck Marratt, vice president of information technology for MTM Luxury Lodging. "It controls the lights in the room, the thermostat in the room, and introduces automated “solar shades” – highly technical Venetian-like blinds placed on the exterior of guestroom windows to keep heat in or out when unoccupied or empty. All cogs operate in an automated environment in the guestroom."

12.10.08 - Bardessono Preps for Ultra-Green Debut in Napa Valley
Hospitality Design

Green developer Phil Sherburne is putting the final touches on his latest venture, the Bardessono hotel in Napa Valley, for a February opening. Designed by WATG's Seattle office, the 62-room luxury hotel and spa is full of eco-friendly details. The property will obtain approximately half of its electricity needs from a 200-kilowatt photovoltaic solar system mounted and concealed atop the hotel's flat-topped roofs. To heat and cool guestrooms as well as the property's domestic water supply, a system of 82 geothermal wells were drilled to work with a specially developed ground source heat pump system. Bardessono also makes use of "upcycled" materials such as recycled steel, green glass tiles, and fly ash concrete. Throughout the property, WATG is using salvaged wood from locally sourced Monterey cypress, walnut, redwood, and eucalyptus trees. Locally quarried tufa stone, salvaged and re-cut from the Bardessono family's original homestead, adorns the hotel's entryway as well as its reception and dining areas. The hotel will also implement low-water use, on-site waste management, and LED and fluorescent lighting.

CHALLENGE The challenge was to design a unique and intimate 62-room boutique luxury lodge and spa on a 4.9-acre site in the heart of Napa Valley. The intent was to create a cutting edge green design with an atmosphere of warmth and community inspired by the architecture and wine culture of Napa Valley.

SOLUTION The project was designed to reflect a blending of the Valley's agrarian character, a refined environment associated with the region's wines, and an indoor/outdoor atmosphere. Sustainable building materials, energy management systems, and solar and geothermal energy were incorporated into the design. Every room has its own courtyard to allow for absolute privacy.

SIZE 4.9 acre-site 62 guestrooms 5,895 square-foot spa

AMENITIES Spa with eight treatment rooms; 75-foot-long rooftop infinity pool; fine dining restaurant; meeting space; private courtyards
