4.27.11 - Hotel Monte Mulini, Wimberly Allison Tong + Goo (WATG) WAN Awards 2011 - Hotel of the Year The historic city of Rovinj on the Istrian peninsula has many hotels, but until the arrival of Monte Mulini, no international-standard five-star properties. The client wanted the bar for luxury hospitality to be raised, and WATG, having won the design competition for the project, delivered. |

8.25.10 - Adriatic Abundance in Rovinj, Croatia Rooms are large, well-designed and colourful with luxurious bathrooms. The spa has glittering gold floors, a small indoor pool with gold leather cubes for tables and a large gold mosaic above. My treatment just had to be the 24-carat gold facial with gold leaf placed on the skin. |

5.25.10 - Hot Weekends The Seaside Special Hvar, the less well-known peninsula of Istria, just across the Adriatic from Venice, is worth seeking out. The ultra-modern Hotel Monte Mulini was built here two years ago, overlooking a pretty cove, with all 113 rooms facing seawards. It is just outside the impossibly pretty town of Rovinj - painted houses, cobbled lanes, lantern-lit cliffside bars where you perch on rocks just above the waves for moonlit cocktails... |

CHALLENGE The challenge was to design a modern and sophisticated five-star hotel in the historic coastal city on the Croatian peninsula of Istria. The design needed to adapt to the local culture and incorporate both summer and winter seasonal elements as well as sustainable design features.
SOLUTION The hotel was designed in a clean, contemporary, yet timeless style. The resort is set within the city on a main promenade in a forested park with a nature reserve situated across the bay; therefore, it was important to incorporate both urban and natural elements in the design. The main feature of the hotel is a large glazed wall, framing a view of the bay from the entrance lobby down through three levels of bars, lounges and restaurants. Sustainable design features include the use of overhangs for solar shading, and natural building materials such as local stone and timber.
SIZE 120 guestrooms including 19 luxury suites
AMENITIES Four storeys of atrium lobby lounge, all-day dining restaurant and wine vault restaurant; terraced reception and breakfast lounge; bar; pool bar/grille; outdoor swimming pool; spa; separate serviced luxury suites
