CHALLENGE The design challenge was to transform Kuwait's largest and most historically significant island into a premier world class destination entertainment resort. It was the client's desire to provide a car-free environment for visitors, and it was critical to maintain the environmental, ecological and historical integrity of the Island.
SOLUTION Because of the vast size of the island, it was essential that the core areas of activity and energy be consolidated to allow visitors ease of movement, easy access to services and to various resort leisure activities. The project was successfully divided into distinct and recognizable precincts based on compatible land uses and resort amenities.
SIZE 4,300 hectares (10,625 acres) Largest of Kuwait's Islands with an area of 43 sm 20 km east of Kuwait City 14 km x 8 km wide
AMENITIES 2 million square meters of new tourist and leisure activities including: 10,000 accommodation units; 11 world class hotels; conference center; 18-hole championship golf course;18-hole resort golf course; marina and boating; competitive sports training center; shopping and culturalamenities; science center and zoo; resort training institute; 7 km man-made recreational "river"
